چکیده

Starting from relativistic quantum field theories, Kovtun et al. (2005) have quite recently proposed a lower bound η/s ≥ ~/(4πkB), where η is the shear viscosity and s the volume density of entropy for dense liquids. If their proposal can eventually be proved, then this would provide key theoretical underpinning to earlier semiempirical proposals on the relation between a transport coefficient η and a thermodynamic quantity s. Here, we examine largely experimental data on some dense liquids, the insulators nitrogen, water, and ammonia, plus the alkali metals, where the shear viscosity η(T ) for the four heaviest alkalis is known to scale onto an ‘almost universal’ curve, following the work of Tankeshwar and March a decade ago. So far, all known results for both insulating and metallic dense liquids correctly exceed the lower bound prediction of Kovtun et al.

Viscosity to entropy density ratio: violation of the lower bound at small temperatures

We show that in theories where the lowest energy excitations are not quasiparticles but they form a continuum, the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio goes to zero as the temperature goes to zero. In these theories therefore there is no lower bound for the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, in contrast to the predictions coming from the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Proof of a Universal Lower Bound on the Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio

It has been conjectured, on the basis of the gauge-gravity duality, that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density should be universally bounded from below by 1/4π in units of the Planck constant divided by the Boltzmann constant. Here, we prove the bound for any ghost-free extension of Einstein gravity and the field-theory dual thereof. Our proof is based on the fact that, for su...

Graphene: a nearly perfect fluid.

Hydrodynamics and collision-dominated transport are crucial to understand the slow dynamics of many correlated quantum liquids. The ratio eta/s of the shear viscosity eta to the entropy density s is uniquely suited to determine how strongly the excitations in a quantum fluid interact. We determine eta/s in clean undoped graphene using a quantum kinetic theory. As a result of the quantum critica...

The Viscosity Bound Conjecture and Hydrodynamics of M2-brane Theory at Finite Chemical Potential

Kovtun, Son and Starinets have conjectured that the viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s is always bounded from below by a universal multiple of ~ i.e., ~/(4πkB) for all forms of matter. Mysteriously, the proposed viscosity bound appears to be saturated in all computations done whenever a supergravity dual is available. We consider the near horizon limit of a stack of M2-branes in the grand c...

Exploring an extension of the correspondence between black hole physics and thermodynamics to non-equilibrium processes, we show that the ratio of shear viscosity to volume density of entropy in theories with gravity duals is equal to a universal value of ~/(4π). We conjecture that this value serves as a lower limit on the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density for all systems realizable i...
